Beat The Summer Heat ( What You Want To Know Wednesdays )

Summer is officially here and that means the heat is here. Unfortunately, electricity bills can also heat up during this time of the year. There are several ways to help beat the heat and put less strain on your pocketbook.

  • According to FamilyHandyman.com, 30% of unwanted heat comes through your windows. 30%! Installing shades, insulating curtains, or tinted window film on your south and west facing windows can save you up to $45 dollars annually! Keep those blinds closed.
  • Ceiling fans can save money and keep you comfortable by circulating air. Make sure to set your fan to rotate counter-clockwise. Bonus tip: fill up a bowl with ice and place it in front of a floor fan to get a cool breeze without turning on the a/c.
  • Use cotton sheets. They’re lightweight and cooling. Also, try using a buckwheat pillow; they don’t hold onto body heat like regular pillows.
  • Cool down your body – not just your house. Placing cold cloths to pulse points like your neck and wrists can help cool your body down. Also, sipping on cold beverages will help cool your body from the inside out.
